All of us experience acne or pimples at some point in our lives. Somehow acne are notorious to occur just before an important function or occasion. In such a situation, what usually comes to our evil minds is to pop it out in lines with a popular hindi saying ‘ Na hoga baans na bajegi baansuri’. However, popping a pimple may help you win a battle but you would definitely end up losing the war. In other words, popping a pimple might help you to get rid of that particular pimple but would lead to inevitable consequences like even more breakouts in the surrounding area, scarring and pigmentation. How? Read on to find out.

As is known, acne appear because of occlusion of skin pores (pilosebaceous unit) with blackheads and white heads (dead skin cells), as a result of which, the oil produces by oil glands gets accumulated in the pores. The oil feeding bacteria, P.acnes, that normally resides in our skin then invades these occluded pores and start to multiply, leading to inflammation and eventual pus formation.

evolution of acne

When you pop your breakout, all the pus and the bacteria inhabiting the pore gets squeezed out and spreads to the surrounding area. As a result, new breakouts are seen around the popped acne in a few days. Also squeezing leads to worsening of inflammation which results in scarring and hyperpigmentation at the site of popped acne. On the other hand, acne which are not popped don’t leave behind long lasting pigmentation and scars.

So the first thing to do when you get acne is to be PATIENT. Irrespective of the number of break outs, itching or pain, don’t touch your acne. Consult a dermatologist for a skin care routine and medication which will help heal your acne and prevent recurrences. Also acne which heal with medication, do not leave behind any scar at all.

Treatment options which can hasten the resolution of acne include:

  1. Intralesional injections- for the painful, deep nodular acne, medicine is injected specifically into the acne lesion which results in shrinkage of lesion and disappearance of pain within 1-3 days.
  2. Black peel- This organic peel system based on black vinegar leads to rapid shrinkage of pus filled lesions
  3. Salicylic acid  peel- this lipophilic  beta hydroxy acid has ability to shrink sebaceous glands and decreases oiliness of skin and resolution of mild to moderate acne
  4. Radiofrequency Ablation- of white heads is an ideal instantaneous  way to treat these notorious precursors of stubborn acne.
